invites you to consider one of the most important stages in planning
and protecting your relationship and laying the foundations for
future happiness.
Foccus (Facilitating Open Couple Communication,
Understanding and Study) is a relationship inventory for couples
planning to marry. Foccus is based upon current knowledge about
the key elements of a successful marriage and helps couples learn
more about themselves and their relationship. It can facilitate
open and honest communication between couples and provide feedback
on where each partner stands in relation to topic areas important
to marriage. It is not a pass or fail test and does not predict
marital success or failure, instead it is about exploring the
relationship and identifying themes that would be useful to discuss
before marriage.
Each partner is asked to respond to a series of
156 statements, plus a number of others that are geared towards
specific issues such as second marriages or inter-faith relationships.
The responses, combined with some biographical information about
each partner, are computer processed to produce a relationship
inventory report. Using the report, the Scottish Marriage Care
facilitator works with the couple to look at patterns in their
responses, discuss any issues that arise and increase awareness
of important relationship topics.
Topic areas covered include: lifestyle expectations;
friends and interests; personality match; personal issues; communication;
problem solving; religion and values; parenting issues; extended
family issues; sexual issues; financial issues; readiness issues;
marriage covenant; family of origin; dual careers.
