What can I say?

Q. My brother in law is giving the bride away, but can't rise to giving a speech, so my daughter has asked me to do it. Being a divorced mum, (my ex husband will not be there, as he has no contact with our children), I have no idea how to go about it, I know very little of the groom, and even less of his family, can you please help me.

A.Speeches are very personal things. Without knowing much of your circumstances, I will assume that the guests will be aware of any sensitive issues. Giving a speech can be extremely nerve racking for all concerned, but do remember that the main pressure will be on the bestman, he is required to be funny and entertaining whilst keeping the formalities of the day in order. To help your situation discuss what your daughter would like you to say beforehand, ask details of the groom if you do not know him, find out how they met, but most importantly keep the speech honest and simple. Being upfront about your nerves, lack of knowledge and the short notice will all help the guests warm to you. Seeing your daughter marry will be a very proud moment for you, take this oppurtunity to tell her so in front of people that matter to her.
