Asking Permission

Is the groom traditionally supposed to ask the father of the bride for his permission before the couple get engaged or after?

Traditionally, the groom is asking for the father of the brides permission to marry his daughter. In years gone by this was always done before a
proposal was made but nowadays usually the question is usually popped first and then ask Dad. I think most Dad's accept that their daughters know their own minds but are still very touched to be asked in the traditional way.

Traditionally the groom is supposed to ask the father of the bride for his daughters hand in marriage before they get engaged. But it has been known for couples to get engaged then ask for permission.

Etiquette says that the groom should ask for the intendeds hand in marriage from her father before he pops the question. It is more common courtesy, and from experience I know that if you don't you're in for a rough ride with your future in-laws!.
