How much for a Minister?
What is an acceptable rate to pay
a 'donation basis only' minister? He will be at the rehearsal
dinner and there for the ceremony. We won't be taking any classes.
A1. There really is no hard and fast rule here. Obviously the
banns etc have to be paid for and these fees are set by the Church
Commisioners and then there may be some other fees, especially
if you are wanting the organist, bell ringers etc. As far as the
minister is concerned, if he works on a donation basis, then you
can do this in one of two ways. The easiest way is to ask him.
Make a joke of the fact that you haven't done this before and
therefore would like to ask his advice on the subject. Most Ministers
are happy to give an indication of what is judged the norm. Obviously,
your own budget should be taken into account also and you should
only give what you can afford and feel comfortable with. The other
alternative would be to ask the minister to advise that a collection
will be taken after the service and a plate can be left at the
back of the church for your guests to make a contribution. Personally,
I would go with the first option and be guided by your Minister.
Depending on the number of guests and the day of the week the
ceremony is conducted etc, I think that you should really be looking
in the region of a contribution of £70 upwards.
I really hope that this helps you and as I said, don't be afraid
to ask and be guided by your minister.

A2. It depends where your ceremony is being held. If your ceremony
is being held in the church your donation would normally be less
than that of your ceremony being held at an other location.
I also do not know where your live and what currency you use so
I will give you my suggestion in pounds sterling.
For a church ceremony I would suggest £100.00 - £150.00
and for a location outwith the church then I would suggest £200.00
- £250.00
I hope this gives you an idea.

A3. I've only come across this situation once before where a donation
was required and the priest indicated to me that £200 was
the going rate.

A4. Well, it depends how you view your minister, and how important
the ceremony part of the day is to you. An approximation of costs
for a church ceremony is in the £200-£300 region (depending
on the church, and this doesn't include for orgnaist, bells, choir
etc). Fees are variable for Registrars and other types of celebrants.
I would suggest that you be open with the minister (after all,
they are marrying you!) and explain that you are new to this,
and wouldn't want to offend, so what are the usual 'ball-park'
figures for the donations that are received. If that doesn't do
the trick, then I'd suggest you look at your budget, and come
up with a % as payment.
